PHMG, which chemical name is Polyhexamethyleneguanidine Hydrochloride, is a kind of advanced safe and green antimicrobial polymer. It is a cationic polymer, has a variety of derivatives including hydrochloride, propionate, phosphate etc. Different derivatives have different features and applications.
As a polymeric antimicrobial agent, PHMG can inhibit almost all kinds of microbes including gram-negative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria, flu virus, fungi etc, has very wide antibacterial spectrum.
Forms of PHMG
There are several forms of PHMG developed and manufactured:
- Solid resin
- Aqua-solution
- Powder
- Tablet
Features and Benefits of PHMG
- Broad spectrum when kill and inhibit microbe;
- Fast antibacterial activity;
- Long-last effective;
- Safe to high-livings;
- No irritation to skin and eyes at recommended concentration;
- No obvious odor;
- Stable, will not volatile, burn, explode;
- Heavy metals Hg, Pb free;
- Easy to mix with other chemicals;
- Suitable for high temperature application.
Identification Method of PHMG
As safe and green antimicrobial agent, PHMG was accepted and welcomed by some industries. Recent years, there appears fake or un-qualified PHMG on the market, which brings troubles to users. Here we provide some ways to identify PHMG:
Way 1. Polymerization
PHMG is a cationic polymer. When test substance has no polymerization, it is not PHMG. However, when there is polymerization exists, but polymerization is too high or too low, it is not good. The polymerization should be in a range as a qualified PHMG.
Way 2. Taste
There is a specific tasting when we taste PHMG at high concentration (PHMG has no obvious toxic even at high concentration, but still strongly recommend wash mouth immediately after tasting product). Please action under professional guidance.
Way 3. Active substance test
Take quantitative analysis of photoelectric colorimetry to detect. Please find detail at < Technical Standard for Disinfection of Hospital >.
Way 4. Microbe test
The killing rate of 0.2% of PHMG water-solution should reach 99% when contact 2min with bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, E.Coli and Candida albicans. Meanwhile, has obvious inhibit activity to Aspergillus Niger.
Test Method of PHMG

Instant Test Method for PHMG
The Instant Analytical Method for PHMG active is helpful to some users for on-line production quality control.
Applications of PHMG
PHMG is ideal for many applications including hygienic disinfectant, water treatment, wet wipes, textile, planting, fishery, plastic, paper etc.
